CLASSES: Drama and Theatre classes at ASB assist students as they gain an understanding of the crafts of acting, playwriting, directing, script analysis and theatre design. Classes study how performance processes impact creativity and everyday life and seek to offer life skills that enhance human interaction to provide for a more expressive life. Rehearsals and performances are at the core of the classes. It is through studying and participating in performance that students come to understand their selves, their peers and their world better. PRODUCTIONS: ASB middle and high school play productions are generally extra-curricular with rehearsals taking place after school. There are two main stage high shool productions a year, one in the fall and one in the spring, and there is one main stage middle school production each year in December. ISTA: ASB is a member of ISTA, the International Schools Theatre Association. Each year there is a high school trip and a middle school trip to attend an ISTA festival. Recent trips have included: Cardiff, Taipei, New Delhi, Singapore and Hong Kong. The 2010 ISTA high school trip will be to London and the Middle School trip will be to Kuala Lumpur. IB: ASB has both a SL and a HL I.B. Theatre. I.B. Theatre Arts has four major assessments, two external and two internal. The assessments are rigorous and include a research investigation, a 30 minute oral, an independent project and a director's notebook discussing an IBO prescribed stimulus. GUEST ARTISTS: ASB regularily brings professional theatre practitioners to campus to conduct special workshops. There are also trips to see evening plays and special workshops offered during the school week and on weekends. Recent guests have included the Jagran Mime Troupe from New Delhi, actor Roo McLaughlin, Marathi theatre scholar Mangesh Bansod and classical dancer/actor Rahul Halde. In 2010 ASB will host Neil Farrelly, artistic director of the UK theatre group NOSE2NOSE for a week long residency which will culminate in a student devised evening performance on January 16, 2010. |
